The first talk includes brief fundamentals of anaerobic treatment, followed by the introduction of a list of traditional and high-rate anaerobic treatment technologies with their case studies. The second one focuses on a new paradigm of examining an integrated biorefinery concept to exploit the potential of biotechnology in recovering bionergy, biofuels and other value-added products from waste biomass with concomitant water treatment and removal of pollutants. During bioprocessing, carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen and sulfur from municipal, agricultural and industrial wastewaters can be converted into valuable resources, e.g. bioenergy and biofuels (hydrogen, methane, ethanol, butanol, and biodiesel), biofertilizer (biosolids and compost, sulfur), chemicals (organic acids and solvents), animal feed (microbial protein), nutraceuticals (chitin, and nisin), others (enzymes and biopesticides). This one will also cover some of the findings of the speaker’s research on resource recovery at Iowa State University. |
